    The German Association for Catalan Studies (Deutscher Katalanistenverband e.V.) calls for paper proposals for a linguistic panel on

    VERBAL PERIPHRASES IN ROMANCE LANGUAGES IN THE LIGHT OF CURRENT GRAMMATICAL THEORIES

    to be held within the 27th German Conference on Romance Languages at Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich (Germany), October 7th - 10th, 2001.

    This panel is intended to focus on all synchronic and diachronic aspects of periphrastic expression of time, aspect and modality in Romance and welcomes contributions with different theoretical backgrounds. Approaches to the description and explanation of verbal periphrases' development and functions may be formal as well as functional, typological or cognitive. The panel takes Catalan and the other Ibero-Romance languages as a starting point, but all Romance languages (including Romance-based creoles) may be considered.

    *********************************** 2nd CERLIS Conference: CONFLICT AND NEGOTIATION IN THE LANGUAGE OF SPECIALIZED TEXTS (Bergamo, Italy, 19-20 October 2001)

    The second CERLIS (Centro di Ricerca sui Linguaggi Specialistici) Conference will focus on the theme of conflict and negotiation in the language of specialized texts and will be held at the University of Bergamo starting on Friday 19th October (morning); proceedings are expected to close by lunchtime on Saturday 20th October.

    Keynote speakers: � Chris Candlin (City University of Hong Kong); � Vijay Bhatia (City University of Hong Kong); � John Swales (University of Michigan)(to be confirmed).

    Parallel sessions on different languages could be arranged. Those wishing to participate are invited to e-mail an abstract (min. 300 words) to Prof. Maurizio Gotti <cerlisunibg.it> not later than 30th April 2001, specifying their name and affiliation. Please do not attach files, but include your abstract in the body of the message. Acceptance will be notified by 30th June 2001. Publication of Proceedings is envisaged.
