Paulette Hopple, SIL linguist in mainland southeast Asia, died unexpectedlyat the age of 60 at the end of a workshop in Kunming. She was cremated andher ashes interred in the Chiangmai (Thailand) Foreign Cemetery. Paulettereceived her PhD in linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington.In the early 1980s she also studied at the University of Rangoon. She willbe remembered for her characteristic vigor and intellectual curiosity asshe pursued research on the many small language groups of theThailand-Myanmar-China region. She was an ardent advocate for training andlanguage development among the Palaungic people groups. In the late 1980s,she was instrumental in the establishment and development of the graduatelinguistics program at Payap University in Chiangmai, Thailand.
