If you are keenly interested in non-literal lexemes ("idioms," "figurative language," "metaphor," "tropes") and/or if you are a subscriber to LINGUIST who is also a certified, active scuba diver, please contact me by e-mail, by snail mail, or by phone.

actually i have two: a question of linguistic terminology, and a question about how to pose such a question. my hope is that you will be able to direct me to a forum that will serve to discuss if not answer my query.

what i'm wondering is: if 'deferment' is a temporal displacement, what is the spatial equivalent ? that is: how do you call that feeling of dropping a shoulder and rolling heads (chin down) - eyes lowered. of what happens to objects as they slip away, lending to what lies beyond.

it seems a sort of 'reference' without such a sense of active putting off (or over). if "-fer" is to bear/carry, what kind gives over by default, resulting in a spatially shifted focus. (the object - carrier - may still exist, but only peripherally: on the outskirts of a spatial boundary).

curious to know where such a question might fit into all the others floating around.

    please respond. jane.

Could someone please e-mail me the address for the journal "Language and Society" along with the editor's name if known?

    Thanks!
