EVOLUTION OF LANGUAGE - A COMPUTER MODELLING PROJECT
Advance Warning
The Sheffield Evolution of Language Group (SELG) has *applied* for a
studentship to be held between the University of Sheffield and
Sheffield Hallam University. The title of this *proposed* studentship
is:
Modelling the evolution of human language using evolutionary computing
techniques.
The ultimate objective of this programme is to provide researchers
with a set of experimental tools to model specific theories of
language evolution. The initial objective is to develop a
communicative protoform, a basic system with as few constraints as
possible, upon which the SELG team can build. SELG are looking for a
PhD student to work on this.
SELG are interested in graduates with a background in linguistics, AI
or other cognate disciplines who are computer literate. A knowledge
of the major theories of language and its evolution is also required.
It must be stressed that SELG have *not been awarded a studentship
yet*. However, *if SELG are successful* in the competition the turn
around time will be very tight, hence this flyer. If anyone is
interested in this project and wants more details please contact:
